When deciding where to study, I was drawn to Aberystwyth because of its strong reputation in the life sciences and its scenic coastal location. I wanted to study somewhere that combined academic excellence with a genuine sense of community. Aberystwyth offered exactly that, providing a close-knit atmosphere both within the University and in the surrounding community.

At the beginning of my degree, I wasn’t entirely sure which area of life sciences I wanted to specialise in. Studying at Aberystwyth has given me a solid academic foundation and the opportunity to engage in genuine research, from fieldwork along the local coastline to laboratory-based projects. Over the four years of my integrated Master’s degree, many lecturers took the time to get to know me and my friends, which made a real difference. The teaching staff are truly supportive, and the department actively encourages students to grow as individuals. I was given the freedom to explore my interests through independent study and research projects, and I always felt that my curiosity was valued.

Outside of my academic work, I also joined a local rugby team, which helped me feel connected to the broader community beyond the university. Balancing my studies with sport gave me a strong sense of belonging and made my experience even more fulfilling.

Having completed my studies, I now feel confident and excited to take the next steps. I hope to pursue a career in environmental or aquatic microbiology, a path I would not have found without the support and opportunities I experienced at Aberystwyth. My time here has already helped me secure a role in academic research, and I feel well-prepared for the challenges ahead. For students who value a quieter environment, strong academic support, and close ties to nature, Aberystwyth is an excellent choice.
