WiFi network for Aberystwyth town centre
Staff and students at Aberystwyth University and Ceredigion County Council staff living and working in Aberystwyth town centre will be able to access the internet via a high speed wireless network free of charge in the near future.

Technical staff at the University's Information Services Department are set to begin work on installing the new WiFi network in the town centre in the New Year and completed by mid March 2008.

Mr Roger Matthews, Deputy Director of Information Services at Aberystwyth, believes the project, which is being done in collaboration with Ceredigion County Council, will be of great benefit to everyone involved.
“Our staff & students will be able to access IT services as if they were on campus with students getting access equivalent to that enjoyed by students in our Halls of Residence. This major project will serve our users who live in a large area around the Old College allowing them to access our network in a secure way at significant speed provided their computers are equipped with WiFi.”

“Ceredigion County Council staff living in the area will also be able to use the new network and have access back to their host institutions,” he added.

Cllr Keith Evans, Leader of Ceredigion County Council “This initiative is very exciting as various organisations are working in partnership to achieve ubiquitous networking and Internet connectivity in Aberystwyth. Ceredigion employees will be able to connect into our IT systems and update them in real time as they go about their work in Aberystwyth and be provided with up to date information through being connected by this wireless network ensuring a better quality of service.”

The University is intending to extend the area served by the WiFi network to the whole of Aberystwyth in the future.

University staff and students wishing to register for the new service should contact the Advisory Desk in Hugh Owen.
