Aberystwyth University has awarded 42 Entrance Scholarships along with 518 Merit Awards and numerous bursaries and other financial donations to students joining the University for the first time in September 2013.

Entrance Scholarship students receive between £1,000 and £1,200 for every year of study, guaranteed accommodation for the duration of the course and an unconditional offer.

The Merit Award comes with an unconditional offer and a one-off payment of £1,000 in the first year.

The 2012-13 report by OpinionPanel Research found that Aberystwyth University has the best range of scholarships, bursaries and awards of any university in the UK.

Gwilym Tudur from Cardiff has been awarded a Senior Entrance Scholarship worth £1,200 a year. “I was taken aback when I heard the news”, he said. “This scholarship really will help me with my living costs and I also intend to spend a great deal on books!

“I chose to come to Aberystwyth mainly due to the reputation of the Welsh and History department at the University. Having the National Library in Aberystwyth is also a big advantage as it includes manuscripts by famous personalities like Morgan Llwyd and William Williams Pantycelyn, which will be very useful as I’ll be studying Welsh and Welsh History.”

Charlotte Whitehouse from Lincolnshire has been awarded the Elizabeth Richards Entrance Scholarship which is worth £1,000 per annum. “I was shocked and thrilled when I heard the news,” she said, “winning the Elizabeth Richards Scholarship is a massive honour.

“The scholarship will not only help me financially, but it also fills me with confidence in my work. I am excited at the opportunity of coming to Aberystwyth and although there are nerves, I won't let it hold me back.”

Professor Martin Jones, the University’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, said, “We are committed to maintaining and enhancing the level of support available to our students and want them to enjoy their student experience.

“Unlike many institutions, all our awards are open to students from all parts of the UK. Our academic scholarships combined with our income contingent bursaries, means that around 80% of our students receive a Scholarship, Bursary or Award of some kind, which is a great incentive to study here.”

There are also several other financial awards available which include the Excellence, Sport and Music Scholarships, and the Residential, Aberystwyth and Care Leaver Bursaries (more information below).

Since the University was founded in 1872, it has received generous donations and bequests which make it possible to financially assist students who want to study at Aberystwyth and enjoy the benefits of Higher Education.
