Aberystwyth University has officially opened newly refurbished teaching spaces in the Department of Computer Science, marking a significant investment in the future of digital education.

The £750,000 upgrade includes state-of-the-art computer rooms in Llandinam building and a completely redesigned Digital Systems Laboratory in the Physical Sciences building.

These revitalised spaces offer modern, accessible, and dynamic environments tailored to foster innovation, collaboration and hands-on learning.

In addition to enhancing the student experience, the refurbishment prioritises sustainability.  The new facilities feature energy-efficient heating and ventilation systems, LED lighting, smart energy controls, and advanced power management infrastructure – in line with the University’s ambition to achieve a net zero estate.

Speaking at the official opening, Vice-Chancellor Professor Jon Timmis said:

“It is a pleasure to open these fantastic new facilities. These upgraded teaching rooms and laboratory reflect our commitment to providing an outstanding learning environment for our students and is a testament to the hard work of colleagues from our academic departments, and Estates and Information Technology Services teams.”

Dr Thomas Jansen, Head of the Department of Computer Science, added:

“The refurbishment has completely transformed our teaching spaces and will make a real difference to our students’ experience. The new facilities are well equipped, technically advanced and designed for flexibility - exactly what we need to support the next generation of computer scientists to thrive in the rapidly changing world of computing.

“Our Department has a long-standing reputation for excellence in teaching and research. The new facilities will support our mission to deliver cutting-edge education in a fast-moving field.”

Led by academic staff from the faculty, the project was delivered in partnership with local contractors Sonny Vaughan Electrical and J&E Woodworks working closely with staff from the University’s Estates and Information Services departments.
