Heritage review stakeholder consultation aims to draw up recommendations for new commemorative criteria

A heritage consultant will consult with stakeholders to provide foundational information which will form the basis for developing new commemoration criteria for Aberystwyth University.

Given the University's commitment to fostering an inclusive and fair approach to the way it treats commemorative items across its estate, it has appointed the heritage consultant to draw up a report that will be able to help it make decisions for the future.

Over the summer, the specialist consultant, Dr Marian Gwyn, will speak to relevant local and national stakeholders to consult on new commemoration criteria.

As part of the review, the consultant will examine the work of other universities in the field together with the University's current assets, considering its plans for investments in its estate and strategic commitments to be a forward-looking organisation.

Dr Gwyn, who is a heritage consultant from Ynys Môn, will carry out the work. She said:

"A number of organisations look at their commemoration criteria from time to time to ensure that they are following best practice. Over the coming weeks and months, I will be gathering opinions and information from various stakeholders within the University and beyond. Drawing on these findings, alongside best practice elsewhere, I will develop a set of recommendations to help shape the University's future decision-making in this area.”

Julie Archer Head of Governance at Aberystwyth University added:

"It is important that the University follows best practice in terms of the criteria we use when investing and making decisions across our estate. This work, which is common in higher education institutions, will not involve the consultant making decisions themselves. It is however important that she has the freedom to handle and discuss a wide range of options and in consultation with relevant stakeholders.”
