Vet lecturer wins national award for inspirational mentorship

A lecturer from Wales’ first School of Veterinary Sciences has been recognised with a prestigious national award for her outstanding contribution to mentoring within the veterinary profession.

Sharon King, a Lecturer in Veterinary Science at Aberystwyth University and practising small animal vet at Downes Veterinary Services in Aberystwyth, has been presented with the British Veterinary Association’s Veterinary Mentor Award 2026.

The award, supported by Hill’s Pet Nutrition, celebrates individuals who go above and beyond to support and guide others within the veterinary community.

Sharon was recognised for her consistent compassion and dedication to supporting students and colleagues, particularly those who may otherwise feel overlooked.

Nominations highlighted her personal and holistic approach, ensuring individuals feel valued not only as professionals in training but as people, while also praising her role in nurturing confidence, wellbeing and professional growth.

Speaking after receiving the award, Sharon King said:

“This recognition means a great deal to me. To play even a small role in supporting and helping to shape the next generation of vets is a real privilege, and one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.  I feel very proud to be part of a profession that places such importance on mentorship and creating an environment where everyone feels supported, encouraged and able to thrive.”

Aberystwyth School of Veterinary Sciences was officially opened by King Charles III in 2021, following an investment of more than £2 million in new teaching facilities on the University’s Penglais campus.  It offers students the opportunity to follow a BVSc Veterinary Science degree in collaboration with the Royal Veterinary College, and a Veterinary Nursing foundation degree.
