Students arrive in Aberystwyth as Welcome Weekend gets underway

18 September 2026

Thousands of students are arriving in Aberystwyth from today and throughout the weekend as Aberystwyth University prepares to welcome new and returning students for its annual Welcome Weekend.

Students will be moving into accommodation and arriving in the town between 18 and 20 September, ahead of Welcome Week activities which begin on Monday.

For many first-year students, the move will mark their first experience of living in Aberystwyth and the beginning of their university journey.

The annual arrival of students is one of the busiest periods in the University and town's calendar, bringing thousands of people from across the UK and around the world to Ceredigion.

Ian Munton, Aberystwyth University’s Director of Student Journey, said: “Welcome Weekend is one of the most exciting times of the year as we say ‘Croeso’ to thousands of students joining our University community.

“Our nursing and veterinary science students have already begun their courses, but this weekend marks the start of the academic year for the majority of our students.

“We want to help students settle into their new home and discover everything that makes Aberystwyth such a special place to live and study, from the University itself to the town, surrounding countryside and breathtaking coastline.

“One of the things that makes Aberystwyth unique is the warm welcome students receive from the local community. Whether it is local residents, independent businesses, bars, restaurants or cafés, they all play an important role in helping our students feel at home in Aber.

“Welcoming thousands of students and their supporters naturally makes for a busy period in the town and everyone at the University is extremely grateful to residents and businesses for their continued support, friendliness and patience.”

The University has organised a range of activities and events throughout Welcome Weekend and the weeks ahead to help students settle in, meet new people and prepare for the year ahead.

As Aberystwyth’s newest arrivals get ready to begin their studies, the University is thanking residents and businesses across the town for helping to make the start of the academic year a positive experience for students and their families.
