Recognition of Excellence - Mrs Foster Watson Memorial Award 2008

It was announced that Dr Robin Chapman is to receive the Mrs Foster Watson Memorial Award (2008) for his book, Un Bywyd o blith Nifer: Cofiant Saunders Lewis .

Harvard Lecture (October 2008)

In October, Dr Bleddyn Huws and Professor Gruffydd Aled Williams (who retired last August) visited Harvard Univeristy, U.S.A. They, along with two research students from the Department, Adrian Morgan and Daniel Ranbom, were invited to take part in Harvard University's Department of Celtic Languages and Literatures' Annual Conference.

Book of the Year Interviews

Dr Robin Chapman, a former winner of the Book of the Year Competition, chaired panel discussions with the shortlisted authors at Hay Literary Festival in May 2008.

Success at the Urdd Eisteddfod 2008

2008 was a notable year for the Welsh Department regarding success at the Urdd Eisteddfod. Dewi Huw Owen, a PhD student in the Department  won the Crown at the Urdd Eisteddfod in Conwy and received high praise for his three pieces of prose written in different forms about “Value”. He also came joint third in the Chair competition.

A Clean Sweep at the Eisteddfod

Iwan Rhys won he Chair at the Urdd Eisteddfod in Conwy for his ode about "Losing"  According to the judges, his ode of no more than 100 lines was “mature, deep, clean and powerful - an ode which fully merited the Chair of the Urdd National Eisteddfod".

Research Assessment Exercise 2008

The Welsh Department at Aberystwyth University is delighted by its Research Assessment result. We submitted more research in Welsh and Celtic Studies than any other university in Britain and Northern Ireland, and 65% of it was placed in the highest two categories of international excellence, with a quarter in the 'world-leading' class.
