Estates Section Maintenance Responsibilities

The Estates Section has an annual budget for the maintenance and repairs of existing building fabric, main services, roads and landscapes. It is not intended to provide for the installation and/or maintenance of specialist departmental machinery and equipment. This document seeks to clarify areas of financial responsibility for building and equipment repair/maintenance works between the Estates Section and individual academic and non-academic departments.

The schedule below gives a guide to areas of responsibility. However, the schedule is not exhaustive. Any disputes or disagreements will be resolved with the Director of Estates, Facilities and Residences , who is responsible for all expenditure from the University’s Estate budget, and relevant Head of Department.

Maintenance and repairs may be carried out by in-house staff or external contractors. Whilst the Estates Section will normally undertake works in-house, on occasions where it is necessary to engage outside contractors to carry out the works which are chargeable to departments, the total cost will be recharged. Any work that is reported but no fault found will result in a recharge for the operatives’ time.
