Holocaust Memorial Day 2026

Bridging Generations: How my parents survived the Holocaust in Slovakia and Poland as young teenagers

Dr Bea Lewkowicz, Director, AJR Refugee Voices Testimony Archive AJR Refugee Voices Testimony Archive and Project Lead, Holocaust Testimony UK Portal Holocaust Testimony UK

In this talk, Dr Bea Lewkowicz examines the Holocaust experiences of her parents, Gertrud Friedmann and Josef Lewkowicz, situating their personal histories within the broader context of the persecution of Jews in Slovakia and occupied Poland. Drawing on recorded and written testimonies of her parents, the talk explores contrasting yet interconnected survival trajectories, including hiding, false identities, deportation, forced labour, and concentration camp imprisonment. Bea further reflects on her own growing up in Germany, post-war silence, memory transmission, and the role of the next generation in preserving and disseminating survivor narratives.

Tea and coffee will be available. All are welcome to this event to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day 2026.
