Seaweed Exhibition – On the Seashore – Art Meets Science

04 June 2025

Following the success of the 2024 collaboration between IBERS and Aberystwyth Printmakers featuring artwork printed on Miscanthus paper — which you can revisit here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFxEyX-ABpE — we’re excited to announce our next creative partnership!

This year, the spotlight turns to Seaweed. Once again, IBERS scientists will be working alongside artists, historians, and the local community to explore the fascinating world of seaweed through both research and artistic interpretation.

The project will culminate in an exhibition at Aberystwyth Arts Centre in December 2025, timed to coincide with the British Phycological Society Conference in January 2026. Expect thought-provoking talks, hands-on workshops (including seaweed papermaking!), and inspiring printworks on seaweed paper — all celebrating the rich biodiversity and cultural significance of our coastal environments.

Our collaborators include:

  • Dr Jessica Adams (IBERS) – Seaweed research.
  • Professor Mary-Ann Constantine (University of Wales) – Historic coastal studies.

  • Professor Mark Macklin (University of Lincoln) – Deep time reflections on rivers and seas.
