Future Fields Research Hub

Agriculture is entering a new technological era as farming systems respond to climate pressures, workforce shortages and the need for data-driven management tools.

To help the industry make the most of innovative opportunities offered by technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, automation and robotics, Aberystwyth University has established a new research hub to translate academic knowledge into practical, cost-effective solutions which support sustainable smart farming.

The Future Fields Research Hub builds on the University’s strengths in plant breeding, drone monitoring, soil sensor networks, life sciences, environmental modelling, robotics and autonomous systems.

Launched in 2026, this new hub connects experts from across the institution, including the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS), the Department of Computer Science, the Department of Life Sciences and the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences.

Together, they combine field robotics and computer vision with precision livestock and parasite surveillance, as well as grassland and crop‑systems management - underpinned by world‑class phenotyping and multi‑spectral sensing from plot to landscape scale. The aims of Future Fields include:

• developing new tools, technologies, and methodologies for precision agriculture and greater production efficiency
• supporting the adoption of robotics and AI in land-based industries
• providing data and evidence-based solutions for farmers, industry partners, and policymakers
• creating opportunities for contract research, consultancy and field-testing

The hub’s objectives align with UK Government strategic priorities as well as the Welsh Government’s Agri‑Tech ambitions: building home‑grown capability, driving on‑farm adoption for productivity and environmental gains, delivering measurable progress towards Net Zero, and developing skills for a digital rural economy.
