Nuclear Non-Proliferation & Disarmament Conference

The conference was one of the first major opportunities for the public to debate the future of Trident, the UK 's nuclear-weapons system, just days after the government announced that a parliamentary vote will take place in early 2007. The event provided many opportunities for informed discussion between the panel and the audience of academics, students, parliamentarians, advocacy groups, journalists and members of the public. The conference brought together expert and high profile speakers who analysed the current state of the nuclear non-proliferation regime, the oversight and enforcement role of the IAEA and the UN Security Council, and future challenges and concerns for the UK and global nuclear security, including the vital question of Trident's replacement.

The speakers were Dr Rebecca Johnson, Founding Director and Editor of the ACRONYM Institute; Tariq Rauf, Head of Verification and Security Policy Coordination of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); Sir Michael Quinlan, Senior Fellow of the International Institute for Security Studies (IISS); Professor John Simpson, Director of the Mountbatten Centre for International Studies, University of Southampton; Paul Ingram , Senior Analyst of the British American Security Information Council (BASIC); Patrick Lamb, Former Senior Political Affairs Adviser, Department for Disarmament Affairs, United Nations; Professor Frank Barnaby, Nuclear Issues Consultant to the Oxford Research Group; Professor Ken Booth, EH Carr Professor, Department of International Politics, University of Wales , Aberystwyth; Lord Hannay of Chiswick, Chair of UNA-UK and former UK Ambassador to the UN.
