"Strategic Narratives of India's Rise in Global Politics"

29 September 2016

A packed Steve Critcher room welcomed this year's first DDMI speaker, Dr. Monika Barthwal-Datta from the University of New South Wales, for a talk on "Strategic Narratives of India's Rise in Global Politics."

The speaker introduced narratives of India as a 'rising power', a 'responsible nuclear weapon state' and explored the strategic incentives of American political elites for creating these narratives. The talk was followed by an engaged discussion and with questions asked by audeience members like, 'How can we explain why India is portrayed as a 'responsible' nuclear power while other 'rising powers' such as Iran or China are not portrayed in the same way?'

This event was the first DDMI event of this academic year and set the tone nicely for the overall theme of 'Great Powers in International Politics.'
