FCO-UNA National Engagement on UN Reform

25 July 2005

In July 2005, the Institute hosted a one day consultation at Aberystwyth University on UN reform, organised by the United Nations Association of the UK. The event was opened by Professor Noel G. Lloyd, Vice-Chancellor and the Mayor of Aberystwyth and featured a keynote address delivered by Lord Hannay of Chiswick.

After discussions in breakout groups on different aspects of UN reform, there was a roundtable involving Lord Hannay, Mr Sam Daws (Executive Director of the United Nations Association UK), Mr Justin Morris (Senior Lecturer in the Department of Politics, University of Hull), Dr Gerry Simpson (Reader in Law at the London School of Economics) and Professor Nicholas J. Wheeler.

The discussions at Aberystwyth were part of a UK wide consultation organised by the FCO and UNA UK following the UN Secretary General's publication of his 'In Larger Freedom' report in the run-up to the 2005 UN World Summit. After the 2005 summit UNA UK produced it own agenda for action 'In Larger Freedom in the UK' based, in part, on the feedback it received from academics, NGOs and the wider public during the consultations.
