Factorisation resolves computational bottlenecks in predicting wave interactions

The EffectFact project, led by Professor Gennady Mishuris, ran from 2021 to 2026, funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie stream of the EU's Horizon 2020 scheme. A new Results in Brief article published on the CORDIS website summarises the results of the project.

"Whether tracking an earthquake’s shockwave through the Earth or tracing the forces pulling apart a DNA strand, energy encounters complex real-world boundaries." To accurately predict the dynamics of such processes, there is a necessary but difficult step: the factorisation of a matrix into a product or sum of simpler matrices. The resulting software package, ExactMPF, which Prof Mishuris developed with PhD student Nataliia Adukova, provides a stable platform to perform the factorisation.

The EffectFact partners used ExactMPF to investigate crack propagation and material failure, and wave propagation in metamaterials.
