Walter Idris Jones Lecture
‘Tracing our understanding of the universe – do we understand more than our forefathers?'
Dr Rhodri Evans from the University of Glamorgan will deliver the annual Walter Idris Jones lecture on Wednesday 21st March at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. The lecture, which is entitled ‘Tracing our understanding of the universe – do we understand more than our forefathers?', will take place at 7.00 p.m. in the A12 lecture theatre in the Hugh Owen Building of the University’s Penglais campus.

As an introduction to the lecture Dr Evans said:
“In the last forty years astronomers have confirmed that the Universe started in a Big Bang, some 14 billion years ago.  We have observed millions and billions of galaxies, and have nearly witnessed the moments when the first stars were formed.  But, over the last decade, a number of experiments have shown that there is a crisis in our understanding of physics and cosmology.  We either have to accept that 95% of the Universe is in a form of matter and energy that we have never seen, or that our understanding of fundamental physics is wrong.  Solving this problem is the biggest challenge facing physicists over the next 20 years.”

Dr Evans is a Senior Lecturer in Astrophysics at the Department of Science and Sport, the University of Glamorgan.

The lecture will be delivered in Welsh, with simultaneous translation available. A warm welcome is extended to everyone.
