The Centre for Educational Studies celebrating World Book Day
On the 2nd of March the Centre for Educational Studies at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth celebrated World Book Day by launching Hwyl Drwy'r Flwyddyn, (Fun Throughout the Year) a series of 12 large books, audio CD and a handbook for teachers for teaching Welsh second language pupils 5 to 8 years old, in Ysgol Gymraeg Aberystwyth.

Celebrations for World Book Day, the Chinese New Year and St Davids Day were combined with the launch of another two volumes, Blwyddyn Newydd China (China's New Year) by Helen Emanuel Davies and Gwyl Dewi (Dewi Festival) by Meinir Ebbsworth.

Year 1 pupils at the school had the pleasure of listening to Helen Emanuel Davies, who is the ex-director of The Centre for Educational Studies, reading two books from the series of which she is co-author Hwyl Drwy’r Flwyddyn, and playing with puppets and Chinese Dragons.

2007 is an important year for the Centre as it celebrates its 25th anniversary. During this period it has published hundreds of titles for the education sector in Wales, with 60 appearing between November 2006 and March 2007.

Lynwen Jones, Director of the Centre said;

“The Centre has made a big contribution to Welsh medium education during the past quarter of a century by developing relevant and lively teaching material at a time when the number of pupils receiving Welsh language education increased significantly.”

A series of 6 factual history books for key stage 2 and 3 pupils prepared by Dr Catrin Stevens is one of the Centre’s latest projects. The project, which will be published around the end of the year, and will be available in Welsh and English, has received financial support worth £42,000 from the Welsh Joint Education Committee.

The Centre produces resources for every age and subject in Welsh and English on audio CDs and CD-ROMs, material for interactive white boards, books and files.
