Two new PhD Studentships offered
The Department of Law and Criminology are inviting applications for two new PhD studentships; one in Criminology and one through the medium of Welsh.

The successful candidate for the PhD in Criminology will undertake research into the nature and extent of crime, the perceptions of anti-social behaviour and the evaluation of the impact of crime control initiatives, on a housing estate in a small town in rural Wales. The three-year award will be made available to a student beginning in the 2007-2008 academic year.  The research will be supervised by Professor Alan Clarke and Kate Williams.

The Welsh Medium studentship is offered for a maximum period of five years, and it includes fees and subsistence costs for the period of study. The studentship holder is expected to contribute to Welsh-medium teaching during this period. Graduates who have already studied for a masters degree will study for 4 years, and graduates without a masters degree will study for five years, and will receive research training during the first year. In both cases, the final year of the studentship will be considered a fellowship year where the teaching responsibilities will increase. This is an excellent opportunity for students to develop research skills in an institution that is committed to excellence in research along with teaching through the medium of Welsh.

The studentship is funded by the National Assembly for Wales through the Welsh Medium Teaching Development Centre as part of the Welsh Assembly Government's Welsh-medium Strategy. The university also contributes financially to the scheme by contributing towards the studentship holder's pay during the final year.
