Aberystwyth University is offering a full programme of activities at this year's National Eisteddfod.

The University stand (no A26) is a stone's throw from the Eisteddfod’s main entrance and Information Centre. In addition to the warm welcome visitors will be able to find out about courses at Aberystwyth and access the web.

Competition
Aberystwyth University and the Olympic Games
Aberystwyth University is on the list of official training centres for the London Olympic Games 2012. To mark this achievement we are holding a competition during the week of the Eisteddfod to win a Trek 3700 mountain bike worth £300. All you need to do is visit our stall and answer a simple question. The winner will be announced at 3.30pm on Friday. This competition has been supported by Summit Cycles of Aberystwyth.

Dr Huw Meirion Edwards: ‘Y Bardd o Blwy Llangywer’
Visit the stand to hear Dr Huw Meirion Edwards from the University’s Welsh Department talking about Madog Dwygraig from the small local parish of Llangywer.

Monday - 3rd of August, 3.30pm
Aberystwyth University Challenge
Test your general knowledge! On Monday afternoon the University will hold a University Challenge quiz. A team of staff members faces a challenge from a team of former Presidents of Undeb Myfyrwyr Cymraeg Aberystwyth (The Aberystwyth Union of Welsh Students). Keeping a watchful eye on proceedings will be the historian and author Dr Russell Davies.

Launch of the Welsh Phrasebook Welsh / English for the iPhone
Professor Chris Price and Dr Adrian Shaw from the Department of Computer Science have developed a new ‘app’ which will be available for download from the itunes website for 59 pence.

Tuesday - 4th of August, 12pm
Moot
In an Aberystwyth nightclub, a man was injured. Today, Rhys Thomas will appear in court. Will he walk free or be remanded in custody? Only the court can decide. Students from Aberystwyth University’s Law and Criminology Department will be presenting the case, so drop by to see the drama unfolding.


Tuesday - 4th of August, 2pm
Dr Bleddyn Owen Huws: ‘Martha, Jac a Sianco – y nofel’
To coincide with the publishing of his notes for Welsh A Level students on Caryl Lewis’, Martha Jac a Sianco, Dr Bleddyn Owen Huws will deliver a short lecture on the novel’s main themes and characters. He will draw attention to the obvious tension in the novel between adhering to a fateful life and the urge to get away from it. He will also be looking at some of the symbolism in the novel.

Wednesday - 5th of August, 11am
Translators’ House Wales / Tŷ Cyfieithu Cymru Reception

Translators’ House Wales is a new partnership between Wales’ Literature Exchange (which is part of Mercator, at Aberystwyth University’s Theatre, Film and Television Studies Department) and Tŷ Newydd, National Writers’ Centre for Wales. During the reception a Bardic Staff will be presented to the winner of the Translation Challenge, and Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas AM, Menna Elfyn and Elin Haf Gruffudd Jones will be among the speakers. Coffee and croissants will be available, so you’re more than welcome to drop by the stand to hear more about Translators’ House Wales / Tŷ Cyfieithu Cymru.

Wednesday - 5th of August, 3pm
Reception for Aberystwyth University Graduates*

A great opportunity for everyone who’s ever studied at Aberystwyth University to get together on the Eisteddfod field. The guest speaker at this year’s event, which is being hosted jointly by the University and the Old Students’ Association, is former Aberystwyth student Mererid Hopwood. Light refreshments will be provided and it will be a chance to reminisce with old friends. All welcome!
* All presentations will be held through the medium of Welsh. Simultaneous translation will be available during the reception for alumni.

Come and learn about the mathematics of soap bubbles and how they can help you find the shortest way home!

Thursday - 6th of August, 3pm
Reception for Prospective Aberystwyth University Students
At 3pm on Thursday there’ll be a warm welcome to all 2009 prospective students to join us for drinks and entertainment by Alun Gaffey. There will be a chance for you, your parents and friends, to chat with University staff and other young people who will be starting at the University in September.

Friday - 7th of August, 12pm
‘Ymchwil Cyfoes ym Maes Polisi Iaith’
At midday, The Institute of Welsh Politics will hold a debate on contemporary research in linguistic policy in the company of Patrick Carlin, John Glyn and Huw Lewis from Aberystwyth University. Meri Huws, from the Welsh Language Board will chair the session and you are very welcome to join in the debate. Light refreshments will be available following the session.
