Aberystwyth University welcomes the Commonwealth Games Baton Relay

The community of Indian students at Aberystwyth University welcomed the Queen's Baton Relay to the University on Monday 9 November as part of the celebrations taking place during the run up to 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

The Baton was in Wales for three days (9, 10 and 11th of November) as part of a 340 day journey that will eventually see it visit the 71 nations of the Commonwealth before returning to the host city of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Delhi in October 2010. The Games will be the biggest multi-sport event ever held in Delhi.

Speaking after the reception which was hosted by Pro Vice Chancellor Dr John Harries, Dr Sangeeta Khorana, a lecturer at the Aberystwyth School of Management and Business said
“The visit of the Queen's Baton Relay to Aberystwyth is a very proud moment for me as an Indian living and working here and to all the students who are studying here.”

“To be associated with the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games in this way is memorable event and a dream come true. In my wildest dreams never did I think that I would be holding the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games baton in Aberystwyth.”

The Baton was accompanied by Ms Avny Lavasa and Mr Mahesh Shankar, members of the Delhi 2010 Organising Committee, relay organiser Annemaree Lavalle, and representing Wales Ron Davies, Cledwyn Ashford, Gareth John chair of Commonwealth Games Wales, and Chris Jenkins Chef de Mission of Team Wales Delhi2010

Currently there are 38 students from all parts of India studying at Aberystwyth. Many are studying for an MBA at the School of Management and Business, whilst others are studying at the departments of Computer Science, Theatre, Film and Television Studies, and Geography and Earth Sciences.

The University has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) in New Delhi which provides for exchange students, exchange of faculty members, joint research projects, joint cultural programs and organization of joint conferences.

During the last academic year the School of Management and Business successfully hosted two students from the IIFT and are looking forward to welcoming two new students in February 2010.
