Aberystwyth Academic Scoops HE Teaching Award

A Senior Lecturer at Aberystwyth University has won a Higher Education Academy award for teaching excellence.

Dr Judith Broady-Preston, who teaches in the Department of Information Studies, received the 2009-10 Higher Education Academy National Teaching Award for the Teaching of Information & Computing Sciences (ICS) in HE in Wales.

The aim of the award is to recognise and reward ICS practitioners working in the higher education sector in Wales who have made an outstanding contribution to the growth, development and enhancement of the teaching of the disciplines through their work and to draw their achievements to the attention of the ICS community as a whole.

One ICS award is made annually by the HE Academy but it’s the first time the prize has been given to an academic at Aberystwyth.
The £5,000 award can be used for education purposes, including the purchase of books and equipment, or travel and other costs associated with teaching, research and professional activities.

Dr Broady-Preston, who joined Aberystwyth University as a Senior Lecturer in 1990, said: “I am delighted to receive this award which is due recognition of all our efforts in DIS, in both widening access to HE and providing work-based learning opportunities for a dynamic and fast-changing discipline and profession.”

Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Martin Jones said the award was a reflection on the quality of teaching at Aberystwyth University.

“Here at Aberystwyth University, we are continually striving to develop our learning and teaching in order to provide students with learning opportunities of the highest quality,” said Prof. Jones.

“We have an ambitious Learning and Teaching strategy and we aim to support staff in all aspects of their continuing professional development. We are therefore delighted that once again, a member of our academic staff has been recognised for the excellence of her teaching skills and our warmest congratulations go to Dr Judith Broady-Preston on her achievement.”
