Aberystwyth University's BA (Hons) Film and Television Studies degree programme and its equivalent course which is taught through the medium of Welsh, have both been awarded the Creative Skillset Tick following a rigorous assessment process by experts working in the Creative Industries.

The Creative Skillset Tick, the industry kitemark of quality, is awarded to practice-based courses which best prepare students for a career in the industry.

Both degrees are delivered by the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies (TFTS) which was established in 1995 and is one of the largest departments in Britain in terms of both staff and student numbers.

Dr Jamie Medhurst, Head of the Department of TFTS, said, “I'm delighted with the fact that our undergraduate courses in Film and Television Studies have been acknowledged by Creative Skillset in this way. It demonstrates that in addition to key critical skills, our courses provide students graduate with the requisite skills for an ever-changing creative industry.”

Elin Haf Gruffydd Jones, Senior Lecturer and Director of External Partnerships at TFTS adds, “The Creative Skillset Tick shows that our courses taught in both Welsh and English are well designed, well taught and delivered in an environment that has suitable resources and facilities. Our longstanding connections as a Department with the creative industries in Wales in particular are at the heart of this achievement.

Professor John Grattan, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Learning, Teaching and Employability at the University, explains, “There has been a revolution in the film and TV industry during the past twenty years and this department has led the way in asserting the value and vitality of creative studies.

“This award is very much a reflection of the incredible work produced by the students and the hard work of the staff.”

The Creative Skillset accredited courses sit within the portfolio of the Creative Skillset Media Academy Wales, a Higher Education and industry partnership that supports courses with the Tick in Wales with additional benefits. The Academy is led by University of Wales, Newport and is in collaboration with the University of Glamorgan, Swansea Metropolitan University and Aberystwyth University.
