Mind Aberystwyth is announced as Aberystwyth University’s Vice-Chancellor’s Charity of the Year for 2015/16.

Now in its fourth year, the Vice-Chancellor’s Charity of the Year seeks to raise vital funds for a worthy cause.

Mind Aberystwyth provides advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. It campaigns to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding as latest figures show that every year 1 in 4 people experience a mental health problem.

Professor April McMahon, the University’s Vice-Chancellor, said: “We are delighted to announce Mind Aberystwyth as the Vice-Chancellor’s Charity of the Year for 2015/16. We are incredibly lucky at Aberystwyth University to have a very involved community of students and staff, and the idea of this initiative is to provide a focus for fundraising and charitable donations through the year.

Mind Aberystwyth promotes and protects good mental health for all, and develops a local service for people affected by mental distress, including their carers, family, friends and supporters. We look forward to supporting them during the coming year, starting with a stall throughout this week’s Graduation ceremonies.”

Every year Aberystwyth University raises money for a different Vice-Chancellor’s Charity of the Year. Students and staff at the University nominate charities and then vote on a shortlist to choose the official Vice-Chancellor’s Charity of the Year.

All the money raised in 2015/16, will be donated to Mind Aberystwyth, to support the charity.

Fiona Aldred, Chief Executive from Mind Aberystwyth said: “We’re thrilled that Aberystwyth University has chosen Mind Aberystwyth to be its Vice-Chancellor’s Charity of the Year. The support from the University will make it possible for Mind Aberystwyth to continue to support people affected by mental distress to live full lives, and play their full part in society.

In 2014/15, Aberystwyth University raised more than £2000 for its Vice-Chancellor’s Charity of the Year, the Aberystwyth Lifeboat and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the RNLI.

Throughout the year students and staff completed a range of activities including a lively zumbathon and mouth-watering bake-offs.
