Researchers from Aberystwyth University have published a new book that sheds light on why people think, feel and behave the way they do.
‘Psychology of Everyday Life: An Evolutionary Approach’examines common human experiences through the lens of evolutionary psychology.
Exploring topics ranging from relationships, humour and family life to religion, play, music, food, media and technology, the book investigates behaviours and experiences familiar to people across cultures, revealing how human evolution continues to shape contemporary life.
Drawing insights from psychology, biology and anthropology, the book is co-authored by Dr Gil Greengross and Professor Nigel Holt from the Department of Psychology at Aberystwyth University, and Professor Lance Workman, Visiting Professor of Psychology at the University of South Wales.
Across its chapters, the authors explain how psychological mechanisms that evolved in our ancestral past continue to influence modern behaviour and decision-making, offering readers new perspectives on some of life's most familiar questions.
Dr Gil Greengross, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Aberystwyth University, said:
“This book brings together decades of research to show how evolutionary thinking can help us better understand ourselves and the people around us. Why do we choose certain partners? Why do we enjoy humour, music and stories? Why are family relationships so important to us?
“By taking an evolutionary perspective, we can see that many behaviours which appear uniquely modern are often responses to challenges our ancestors faced over thousands of generations. Understanding those origins can give us valuable insights into the way we live today.”
Nigel Holt, Professor in Psychology, added:
“Our aim was to make psychology engaging, relevant and accessible without sacrificing scientific rigour. We wanted to write a book that demonstrates how evolutionary psychology can help explain everyday experiences, while encouraging readers to think differently about human behaviour.
"Although the book will be particularly valuable for undergraduate psychology students, it is written for anyone with an interest in understanding themselves, the people around them, and the science behind everyday life."
The publication reflects the authors' long-standing research and teaching interests in evolutionary psychology and human behaviour, bringing together insights from multiple disciplines for both students and general readers.
Psychology of Everyday Life: An Evolutionary Approach was released on 14 October 2026 by Routledge.
