Studying through the medium of Welsh

Here in the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies we have been blazing a trail for Welsh medium education since the establishment of the department in the 1970s.

We provide cutting edge degree schemes through the medium of Welsh, and many of our alumni have gone on to play prominent and important roles within the creative industries in Wales and beyond.

We offer opportunities for students who are fluent in Welsh, in addition to those who are less confident or learners. There are variations in undergraduate course modules and the amount that can be studied through the medium of Welsh - from a few modules to the entire course. You can also study modules in Welsh even if you are studying mainly in English. In the Department we offer two degrees that can be studied entirely through the medium of Welsh: BA Creu Perfformio / Creating Performance (W470) and BA Creu Cyfryngau / Creating Media (P310). These schemes are eligible for the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol's main scholarship and the William Salesbury scholarship. See the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol website for more information.

All Aberystwyth University students have the right to submit work for assessments, including essays, and sitting exams, in Welsh, even if the modules have been taught through the medium of English. In cases where the lecturer who teaches the modules is not able to speak Welsh, some departments will arrange that a member of Welsh speaking staff marks the work. In other cases, departments will arrange that the work is translated into English.
