Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be:
a) Familiar with a body of historical knowledge in the field of the social history of European political movements, parties and regimes between 1789 and 1945.
b) Familiar with the perspectives and techniques of history written `from below?.
c) Familiar with comparative perspectives on the history of political culture in modern Europe, and in particular with the concepts of a `norm? in western European political development and of specific national deviations from it.
d) Able to read, analyse and reflect critically on secondary and primary texts
e) Able to gather and sift appropriate items of historical evidence
f) Able to work both independently and collaboratively, and to participate in group discussions (not assessed)

Brief description

This survey module seeks to provide students with a grasp of the features of modern political culture in Europe which distinguish it from other periods and parts of the globe. It is intended both to serve as an introduction for students whose specialist interests lie in other periods, and to provide a broader sense of context for students taking Option modules in the modern period, especially in Russian, French and/or German history.
