Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Demonstrate the ability to fulfill a working role within a Biotechnology organisation, Critically evaluate the challenges of applying biotechnology in an industrial environment
Demonstrate an ability to contribute to project teams and respond to informational demands from other areas of the organisation, Evaluate the relative limitations and merits of different technologies
Assess the context, risks and opportunities that exist in the biotechnology industry
Communicate appropriately within a company context, e.g. to, technologists, sales and marketing, CEO and shareholders.
Content
A series of 8h lectures, a 2-4 week industrial placement, and innovative group exercises.
The aims of the module are:
To provide students with a genuine experience of an industrial biotechnology environment and so provide them with a deeper understanding of applied biotechnology from the industry perspective.
It will achieve this by considering, for example, the following areas:

- Different business models, e.g. IP vs technology
- Existing and emerging applied biotechnology technologies
- Biotechnology within a business environment (R&D, production, batch testing etc)
- Making biotechnology profitable

Problem solving | Students will be expected to undertake tasks assigned by their placement company and otherwise participate in the firm’s normal operations. Dealing with and solving problems will be a normal part of this process. Formal feedback will be provided. |
Research skills | Research within the company and for the assessed report and any other research work generated by the placement organisation. |
Subject Specific Skills | Application of the knowledge acquired in the taught part of the course to an industrial environment. |
Team work | Group work. Students will, of course, be in a corporate setting for their placement, where teamwork and projects will be a routine element of the organisation. |
