Professor Homagni Choudhury joined Aberystwyth University in November 2025 as Professor of Economics and Head of the Aberystwyth Business School. He brings extensive academic, research, and strategic-leadership experience to the role, having previously served in senior positions across several UK universities.


Professor Choudhury was formerly the inaugural Head of the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance at the University of Portsmouth, a role he took up in August 2022 after initially joining Portsmouth as Head of the Economics and Finance Subject Group in October 2021 within the Portsmouth Business School. Prior to this, he was Associate Professor of Economics and Head of the Department of Economics at Kingston University from 2017 to 2021, where he also co-led the Applied Economics Research Group and continues to hold an Honorary Affiliation. Earlier in his career, he served as Director of Research for Accounting, Finance and Economics at Aberystwyth Business School, and previously led its Economics programmes as Course Director.


Professor Choudhury holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Dundee, an MSc from Lancaster University, and a BA (Hons) in Economics from Ramjas College, University of Delhi.

Professor Choudhury’s research expertise spans Development Economics and Applied Economics, with interests in international trade, labour markets, productivity, industrial and regional economics, and the economics of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). He has led and contributed to multiple externally funded interdisciplinary projects funded by bodies such as the British Academy, British Council, Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF), and industry bodies such as the Independent Games Association (TIGA). He was associated with the World Bank's 'Jobs and Development' initiative at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), New Delhi, from 2014-2016.


Professor Choudhury has examined several doctoral theses as an external examiner in the UK and abroad. He has also successfully supervised a number of doctoral students at Portsmouth, Kingston and Aberystwyth University. He welcomes applications from prospective doctoral candidates interested in applied and policy-oriented research in development and trade, productivity, structural transformation, labour markets, and economics of SME.
