This document should be read in conjunction with Aberystwyth University Regulations for Modular Initial Degrees, and the following Examination Conventions: Bachelor's Degree: Rules for Progression, Integrated Master’s Degrees: Rules for Progression and Degree Schemes with Sandwich Year, or Integrated year Studying Abroad non-language schemes.

The general information in the above sections applies; however, bespoke scheme specific rules are detailed below.

Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)

1. In order to qualify for the degree, students must meet the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) accreditation regulations. Aberystwyth University will be working towards IET accreditation when the first cohort graduates in 2028. IET accreditation will be subject to approval by the IET at that time.

2. The Engineering Council has specific rules in relation to compensation. These are applicable to all programmes which are accredited by Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Bodies (PSRBs) that are under licence by the Engineering Council.

3. For these programmes, the University applies a definition of compensation that is consistent with the Engineering Council’s definition, as follows:

Compensation is “The practice of allowing marginal failure (i.e. not more than 10% below the nominal pass mark) of one or more modules and awarding credit for them, often on the basis of good overall academic performance”. Please see below for award-specific rules.

Award Specific Rules

4. A maximum of 30 credits in a Bachelors or integrated Masters degree programme can be compensated (excluding foundation year). The following conditions apply:

a. The module must be designated as compensable in the programme specification.

b. The module must not be an individual or group project.

c. The minimum module mark for which compensation is allowed is no more than ten percentage points below the nominal module pass mark.

d. The student must have an average mark of at least 40% across the full 120 credits of assessment in the level, including any failed and compensated modules. The required average will be 50% in the final level of a MEng programme.

5. All AHEP learning outcomes must be met. If a pass mark has been achieved for the module, but one or more of the individual AHEP learning outcomes assessed within that module is failed, overall the module is deemed to have been failed and the learning outcome must be re-sat.

6. Where modules include multiple assessments (components) that assess different Learning Outcomes a pass threshold should be adopted, with this pass threshold no more than 10% below the normal module pass mark.

BEng Progression rules

Foundation Year

7. Standard AU progression rules apply (4.2 Bachelor's Degree: Rules for Progression/ 2.1 Part One – students who entered Part One FROM September 2018)

Year One

8. Students will pass year one if they satisfy the following conditions in their year one module assessments:

(i) passes at 40% or more in 100 credits’ worth of modules

(ii) an overall weighted average of at least 40%

(iii) no fails below 30% (*Engineering Council compensation requirement)

Part Two

9. The following progression rules will only apply if students have not exceeded the 30-credit maximum limit of compensation across the entire programme (excl. FY) as permitted by IET.

10. To progress from one year of study to the next, students must pass a minimum of 100 credits, with an average of 40%, and with no fails below 30% (*Engineering Council compensation requirement), excluding level ‘S’ modules, i.e. marks gained from a Sandwich/Intercalary year.

Integrated Masters (MEng)

Part One

11. Students will pass year one if they satisfy the following conditions in their year one module assessments:

(i) passes at 40% or more in 100 credits’ worth of modules

(ii) an overall weighted average of at least 40%

(iii) no fails below 30% (*Engineering Council compensation requirement)

Part Two

12. The following progression rules will only apply if students have not exceeded the 30-credit maximum limit of compensation across the entire programme as permitted by IET.

13. To progress from one year of study to the next, students must pass a minimum of 100 credits, with an average of 40%, and with no fails below 30% (*Engineering Council compensation requirement), excluding level ‘S’ modules, i.e. marks gained from a Sandwich/Intercalary year.

14. In order to remain on the MEng, students will be required to achieve an overall average of 55% in year 2 to progress to the third year. Students failing to achieve this minimum requirement will be required to transfer to a Bachelor’s degree. Students must pass the second year to be allowed to progress to an industrial year.

Sandwich year

15. Standard AU progression rules apply (4.5 Degree Schemes with Sandwich Year, or Integrated year Studying Abroad non-language schemes).

Qualification for award

16. To qualify for the award of a BEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering and MEng Sustainable Electrical and Electronic Engineering scheme, students must pass all modules across Part One (excl. FY) and Part Two, including M-level; compensated passes of between 30 and 39% (40 and 49% for Level M) are permitted in up to 30 credits across the entire programme (excl. FY).

Exit awards

17. A candidate who achieves an overall mark of 40% at Part One but does not proceed with study will be eligible for the award of a Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE) in Electronic and Electrical Technology (120 credits at Level-4), which is not accredited by the IET.

18. A candidate who achieves an overall mark of 40% or more in year 2 but does not proceed with study will be eligible for the award of a Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE) in Electronic and Electrical Technology (120 credits at Level-5), which is not accredited by the IET.

19. An MEng candidate who achieves an overall mark of 40% or more in year 3 but does not proceed with study will be eligible for the award of a BEng in Electronic and Electrical Technology, which is not accredited by the IET, or the accredited BEng in Electronic and Electrical Engineering if the professional accreditation requirements have been met (120 credits at Level-6).

20. A candidate who fails to achieve the professional accreditation requirements set out above, but meets the AU modular initial degree regulations, will be eligible for the award of a BEng/MEng in Electronic and Electrical Technology, which is not accredited by the IET.
