Information on learning Welsh, language improvement and mentoring for staff

Providing opportunities and encouraging staff to learn and improve their Welsh is an important part of the Centre's mission. We are also eager to provide opportunities for staff to use Welsh, whether learners or fluent speakers. A full timetable of the community Welsh courses available via the Learn Welsh team is on the Learn Welsh website.

We also arrange occasional short taster courses which are tailored to the needs of specific departments or to groups of staff. Contact the Centre (canolfangymraeg@aber.ac.uk) should you require any further information.

Work Welsh Courses

If you are a member of staff at the University and would like to develop your Welsh language skills for the workplace, you can register on a Work Welsh course as part of a scheme funded by the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol.

Taught via Zoom with opportunities to meet face to face from time to time, we offer courses from beginner to Advanced level. There will also be self-study on-line courses at Entry and Foundation levels. Please seek your Line Manager’s permission prior to registration.

Mentoring Scheme for Welsh Learners

The Centre works closely with the Centre for Staff Development and Academic Training to deliver the University's Mentoring Scheme for Welsh Learners. The scheme brings together fluent Welsh speakers, who act as mentors, and Welsh learners to provide them with the opportunity to speak Welsh in a relaxed atmosphere.

Guidelines for Mentors

If you are interested in being a mentor or a mentee, or if you have any questions about the scheme, please contact the Centre at canolfangymraeg@aber.ac.uk to discuss.

Learn Welsh Fees (Staff)

The Centre has a procedure for paying the fees of staff who attend Welsh lessons arranged by Learn Welsh.

The Learn Welsh Fee Claim Form must be completed and sent to the Centre for Welsh Language Services for the fees to be paid for.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You will be expected to reimburse all fees to the University if you do not complete the course.
(Attend all 3 terms including at least one session during the final 4 weeks of the course)
