Support for studying in Welsh: Academic, language and employability skills
Aberystwyth University is one of the main providers of Welsh medium Higher Education, and most of our academic departments offer modules taught partially or entirely in Welsh. We welcome students from all backgrounds to study in Welsh with us. For those who feel they would benefit from support to study in Welsh, improve their Welsh, or develop their skills for a bilingual workplace, there are plenty of options.
Modules
Open Welsh medium skills modules
The University has developed modules that provide 20 Welsh-medium credits per year, which are open to any undergraduate students (subject to their degree scheme rules). They are suitable for students on degree schemes with limited Welsh provision or for students who want to build their confidence in using Welsh in their studies and/or in the workplace.
CY11020 Ymwneud a’ch pwnc yn Gymraeg
This is a first-year module for students who want to build confidence using Welsh at university and to prepare for using Welsh in the workplace. It includes sessions that help students study their subject in Welsh and language support sessions that prepare students for the Welsh Language Skills Certificate.

Ready to turn your Welsh skills into a professional skill?
Here are two 10-credit Lifelong Learning modules available for free to Aberystwyth University students. You'll earn credits in addition to your degree, and the modules are available to students at any level and in any year. You can study one module or both.
The modules focus on ten skills that are important in the workplace and help you recognize how you develop them through your university studies and other activities and experiences.
You'll get flexible delivery, with a mix of online activities you can do in your own time, live sessions on Teams, face-to-face sessions, and some hybrid options.
Welsh Language Proficiency Modules by the Department for Welsh and Celtic Studies
There are a number of modules available to help students outside of the department boost their confidence in writing, communicating, and using Welsh verbally. Some are suitable for students who went to Welsh-medium schools, and others for students who learned Welsh as a second language at school.

Support for studying and assignments
One-on-one help and advice in Welsh on using the libraries, finding materials for assignments, referencing, and more, are available through the subject librarians.
Writing support in Welsh with the Welsh-medium skills tutor
Dr Tamsin Davies, a Welsh-Medium Academic Skills Tutor, provides one-to-one support in academic writing in Welsh for essays, reports, presentations, extended essays, and more.
The university skills development hub, AberSkills, offers a variety of resources to help students study through Welsh. Pytiau Parod is a series of short video workshops that provide support on the following topics:
Live Welsh-medium workshops on writing in Welsh, academic skills, and employability skills are also advertised on AberSkills. Subscribe to receive a weekly email about these workshops. The workshop materials are available on Blackboard.
There’s also a range of online Welsh-medium resources on skills such as referencing, artificial intelligence, maths, writing for assignments, digital skills, and information skills.
Support for developing skills for the workplace
Departmental modules
Several departments offer a Welsh-medium module that develops employability skills in the context of the subject. They cover skills such as writing a CV, giving a verbal presentation, communication, and teamwork. Check with your department to find out which modules are available in your subject.

For students interested in Welsh within a professional setting, and Welsh-medium administration in the context of specific language legislation requirements CY35600 Y Gymraeg yn y Gweithle is available. This module deals with topics such as translation, implementing Welsh Standards / Language Plans, teaching Welsh to adults, editing and proofreading printed text, along with more general skills and a work placement. Check with your department to see if you can register for the module.
Careers and Employability Services
DG31020 Sgiliau cyflogadwyedd ar waith
This is a Year 3 module run by the Careers Service that includes a work experience placement in a commercial, government, local authority, or charitable organisation, along with employability seminars and language support workshops. It's aimed at students interested in using their bilingual skills in the workplace without necessarily wanting to work in Welsh language services as a professional field. Check with your department to see if you can register for the module.
The Professional Pathways Internship Program provides work placements for final-year students across departments and services at Aberystwyth University. This can include opportunities to develop and use your bilingual skills.
