Batrum Genealogical Project

The AHRC has awarded £304,839 from its Resource Enhancement Fund to Dr Bleddyn Huws, Professor Gruffydd Aled Williams and Professor Patrick Sims-Williams for a new research project. The project will create a searchable electronic version  of  Dr Peter C. Bartrum famous Welsh Genealogies A.D. 300 - 1400 (1974, revised edition 1981), and Welsh Genealogies A.D. 1400 - 1500 (1983).  The completed project, which will involve the creation of a website and a DVD, will include both published and hitherto unpublished revisions by the author himself.

Work on the project began in October 2006. Dr Gwen Angharad Gruffudd has been appointed as Post-Doctorate Researcher, with Dr Iwan Price as an Administrative Assistant and Claire Melton from the Department of Computer Science as a part-time Database Advisor.

Bartrum’s works are considered an important resource for historians and researchers of the arts that were patronized by the noblemen commemorated in the genealogies, specifically literature, architecture and heraldry. However, the volumes are comparatively rare (with only one set in the whole of Scotland, for example). The set that was presented to the Department of Welsh at Aberystwyth University by the late  P.C. Bartrum himself is unique in that it contains all the revisions made by the author between its publication date and October 2004.

The provisional date for launching the website and the DVD, which will include a User’s Guide, is the end of 2009. For more information, visit: News article uwa11506
