Welsh Students Confident

01 February 2009

Despite concerns about the effect of the present economic situation on employers demand for new staff, a survey by the Welsh Department has given results which indicate that prospective graduates in the subject believe that  a degree in Welsh is a qualification which will help them to find future employment.

Another positive result from the survey conducted during February 2009 is that all the students who completed the questionnaire believe that a formal qualification in Welsh gave them an advantage whilst competing with other graduates in a society where there is increasing demand for a bilingual workforce.

The results also showed that 92% of prospective graduates wished to stay in Wales to live and work after they graduated. When asked in what part of Wales they wished to live and work after graduation, 41.6% of them specified counties in west Wales, either in the North or the South, 25% said they wished to stay in mid Wales, and 29.1% noted that they wished to move to Cardiff. Amongst those who wished to go to Cardiff 43% were keen to return to the counties in west Wales (North and South) after a period in the capital.

This confirms the results of the annual surveys carried out by the College's Careers Service. They indicate that nearly all of our graduates succeed in obtaining their first jobs within six months after graduating, and that those jobs correspond to their qualification. It is pleasing to see that our prospective graduates have such confidence in the value of the qualification that they strive to secure, especially during a period when it appears that the competition for jobs is much fiercer than in previous years.
