Welcome to one of the oldest and largest departments of Geography and Earth Science in the UK.
The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences is one of the largest and most experienced of its kind in the UK, specialising in a broad range of themes across the natural, physical and social sciences. We have recently celebrated a century of Geography at Aberystwyth, and we’ve been teaching the Earth Sciences for even longer!
We have a longstanding tradition of offering contemporary and exciting degree schemes, and have recently added Sociology to our portfolio, born out of over 100 years of cutting-edge social science research at Aberystwyth University.
So why choose Aberystwyth University?
Aberystwyth is a vibrant, cosmopolitan bilingual university town, between the rolling Cambrian Mountains and the stunning coastline of Cardigan Bay.
We benefit from a wealth of resource right on our doorstep that include mountains, rivers, sea, and rural and urban environments. At 'Aber', you can explore Geography, Sociology, Earth and Environmental Sciences in a way that no other University can offer. You will be part of a thriving campus university with its own sports centre, a busy Arts Centre; and you will be next door to the National Library of Wales, only one of five copyright libraries in the UK.
Our staff are passionate about what they do. They are dedicated researchers and lecturers, many of whom are at the forefront of their respective fields. Their first-hand knowledge of the world is fed into our undergraduate courses through a variety of specialist themes.
We provide a range of learning and research opportunities, whether it be in a lecture theatre, a seminar class, a tutorial, or in laboratory or field courses. Our students are assessed in a variety of ways, including exams, reports, presentations, videos and essays, all of which are designed to enhance subject-specific, personal and transferable skillsets.
As well as highly satisfied students (91% overall satisfaction – NSS 2019), we have always had a strong track record of producing highly employable graduates. The most recent survey found that over 97% of our former students were in employment or postgraduate education within 6 months of graduating (HESA 2018)
Further information about our research expertise, undergraduate and postgraduate courses can be found throughout our webpages.
We encourage those interested in studying with us to visit us on an Open Day or Applicant Visiting Day to see what makes Aberystwyth such an incredible place to learn.
