Student and Staff Exchanges with Eskişehir Technical University

Jack Arnold presenting his work
Catastrophic earthquakes in the Kahramanmaraş region of Türkiye in 2023 have re-invigorated research in wave propagation in deformable solids. This has led to a new research collaboration between applied mathematicians in Aberystwyth and at the newly established Eskişehir Technical University in Türkiye. Funded by Medr's International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF), a series of exchange visits for staff and students are taking place to train early-career researchers in mathematical techniques relevant to structural safety, seismology and modern materials engineering.
We were able to welcome Prof. Nihal Ege and Prof. Barış Erbaş from Eskişehir in February, with three of their PhD students. Prof. Erbaş gave a research seminar to the department, and MathSoc arranged an event to welcome the students, at which they presented work on the mathematical analysis of motifs in Turkish rugs. This followed a visit by Prof. Gennady Mishuris to Eskişehir in January, who travelled with his colleagues Dr Daniel Peck and Mrs Nataliia Adukova. Most recently, one of our undergraduate students, Jack Arnold, made a return visit to Eskişehir. He gave a seminar on the work of his third year project on the modular group to an audience of staff and students, and was able to enjoy the local cuisine. A further visit of the Turkish team to Wales is planned for next month, as part of the Wales Mathematics Colloquium at Gregynog Hall.
