Fee Information for Research Programmes - Home students
The tuition fee for Home students on postgraduate research programmes (PhD, MPhil, LLM by Research and DProf) aligns with the UK Research Council fee rates which are announced in the spring of each year.
The 2026-27 Home fee level for postgraduate research schemes is £5,238; however the 2027-28 fee is likely to be higher. The confirmed fee level for PGR study beginning in the 2027 academic year will be confirmed by June of the previous academic year.
Fees for Home students on postgraduate research courses are also subject to annual increases due to changes in the prevailing rates set by the UK Research Council. The University will notify you of any fee increase as early as possible and in any event by the end of June in the academic year before the one in which the fee increase will apply.
Additional Course Costs: You should be aware that on some courses there are additional charges during your studies for field trips and use of additional resources. These are in line with the practice of departments in other UK universities.
Agricultural & Biological Sciences: It may be necessary to charge supplementary fees up to a maximum of £7,500 for each year of study for research in the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences and Department of Life Sciences involving large animals or significant amounts of consumable reagents, some of which can be inherently costly. Whether a supplementary charge is levied and the extent of that charge will depend on the nature of the research being undertaken. Applicants will be advised of any such charges at the earliest stage in the offer process.
