The GO Sustainability Pledge

Do your bit to be a conscious traveller and sign the pledge.

While studying abroad is a once in a lifetime experience, it is important to recognise the impact travel has on the planet. Global Opportunities encourages students to implement ways to reduce their carbon footprint when taking part in these amazing opportunities.

Travel slow, think 'Green'

Did you know a non-stop flight from Birmingham to Paris emits around 1.2 tonnes of Co2 emissions? Choosing alternative methods of transport, such as the Eurostar will dramatically reduce your carbon footprint. If you are unable to avoid travelling by air, try and book flights from airlines that allow you to offset carbon or are carbon conscious.

Taking the time to travel slowly gives you the opportunity to see more and travel to places which you might not have if you were travelling by any other means.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Usually, less plastic is used when buying from local producers. You can find lots of reusable travel items in your local outdoor shop. Many items are small and can easily be tucked away in your backpack for use throughout your travels.

Taking small steps can go a long way – it will reduce your use of single use plastic and save you money.

Live like a local!

Taking part in community conscious activities is an excellent way to immerse yourself in local life. It’s a great way to meet new people and give something back to the community. Why not take part in a beach clean, or a local wildlife survey?

Learning about the local language, history or customs helps build unique memories. Ask questions – it’s likely that locals will be more than happy to teach you about their life and culture. Respect local laws and guidelines, from traffic rules to health and safety. A little bit of respect goes a long way.
