Student Profiles

Esperanza Aitana Bizama Monnier
(MA Literary Studies)
What do you love about Aberystwyth and Aberystwyth University?
My favourite thing about Aber is the sense of community. People in Aber are incredibly welcoming and warm. I love the town, and the fact that I can walk everywhere. The sea is also a big bonus.
What have you enjoyed most about your course?
The department. The lecturers are really friendly, supportive and engaging. I also like how you can shape your course to align with your interests. There are many modules you can choose from, so the course is tailored to you.
How did you find adjusting to life in Aberystwyth?
When I came to Aber for the first time in 2021 to do my undergrad I took a leap of faith. I had never been to Wales before and I did not know anyone that lived here. It was also my first time living on my own, with the added difficulty of moving to the other side of the world during COVID. Nonetheless, it was not hard at all adjusting to life in Aber. I immediately met friends, who to this day I am really close to, that were also learning how to navigate life as adults for the first time. Aber quickly became my second home, so much so that I stayed to do an MA.
What advice would you give someone considering studying at Aberystwyth University?
Aber is an incredibly friendly place. If you want to feel like you belong, this is your place. Try as many clubs, societies and volunteering projects as you can, it is an amazing way of meeting like-minded people. I also really enjoyed becoming an Academic Rep and being involved with the Undeb.
Have you joined any student clubs or societies and what have you enjoyed about them?
Throughout the four years that I studied in Aber I joined many clubs and societies. From the Jewish Society and the Book Club to Lacrosse, Fencing and Cheerleading, I tried to experience Uni life to the fullest. I enjoyed all of them, as I got to meet people from different degrees and try out new hobbies.
