The Keates-Lee Educational Trust Bursary
The Keates-Lee Educational Trust Bursary is a £4,000 1st year scholarship available to high-achieving undergraduate students from African nations. This scholarship will be awarded to 2 successful candidates each September intake.
Eligibility
Students must be applying for a 3-year or 4-year undergraduate programme in one of the following subject areas:
- Accounting and Finance
- Agriculture
- Biosciences
- Business & Management
- Ecological Sciences
- Economics
- Engineering
- Geography, Earth & Environmental Science
- Law
- Political & International Relations
- Veterinary Studies
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- Are permanently resident in an African nation.
- Are refugees, domiciled in the UK, who have been forcibly displaced due to recent or ongoing conflict; persecution; or humanitarian crises.
Students must be international-fee payers.
Students must be self-funding and not in receipt of any external scholarships.
Students should meet the University’s usual entry requirements, including completion of high school within 2 years of the start date at Aberystwyth University.
Students must be high-performing in their high school grades, demonstrating one of the following, or equivalent as deemed by the scholarship awards committee:
- A-level 3 x B Grades and above
- IB score of 34 and above
- Minimum 3 x A1 Grades at WAEC/NECO/WASSCE
- Overall A in KCSE
- Minimum 3 x scores of 7 in NSC
- Moroccan Bac. 16/20
- Algerian Bac. 16/20
- UACE 3 x B Grades and above
September 2026 Timeline
- February 27th 12:00 GMT: Application Deadline
- March 27th: Successful, reserve, and unsuccessful candidates will be notified of the outcome of their application.
- June 5th 12:00 GMT: Deadline for successful candidates to have accepted the award and made £5,000 tuition fee deposit payment
- If you are a reserve candidate, you would be notified following this date if you are being allocated an award, and would have until mid-July to accept and pay your tuition fee deposit.

Terms and Conditions
- These scholarships are restricted to students who are overseas fee payers and are entirely self-funded (students in receipt of a repayable loan to fund their studies are considered as self-funded).
- Students must be ordinarily resident (see below for the definition of ordinary residence) in one of the countries listed below.
- Students must be completing either a 3-year or 4-year undergraduate degree; the award is not applicable to top-up programmes.
- This scholarship can be combined with the Regional Scholarship and the International Accommodation Award (IAA) only. It cannot be held in conjunction with any other Aberystwyth University awards, bursaries or scholarships.
- Students must be holding a conditional or unconditional offer from Aberystwyth University for September 2026.
What is “Ordinary Residence”?
For the purposes of assessing eligibility for the scholarship, you must have been ordinarily resident in one of the countries listed below, for the three-year period prior to the start date of your course. Ordinarily resident means that you must have been habitually, normally and lawfully residing in one of the countries listed, from choice, for the specified period. The three-year period for courses starting in September 2026 is calculated as 1 September 2023 to 1 September 2026. Temporary absences during this three-year period may be permitted at the discretion of the relevant University officer. Students may be asked to provide evidence to determine ordinary residence.

Payment Arrangements
These scholarships will be granted as a £3,500 reduction on the total cost of tuition fee that is payable for the students’ 1st year of study at the University. Payment cannot be offset against the tuition fee deposit. An additional £500 will be available to each student at the end of their final semester in 1st year, to support with any travel or accommodation expenses over the Summer break.
