Race Equality Charter - Working Groups

The Race Action Group (RAG) has responsibility to prepare the University’s Race Equality Charter Mark Bronze award application, and thus becomes the core Self-Assessment Team (SAT).

The University is working towards a Race Equality Charter Bronze Award application by November 2024.

The RAG membership was established based on roles and responsibilities within the University. To progress work on specific areas of the Race Equality Charter application’ the RAG have identified 3 working groups which has attracted interest and membership that is representative of the University.

Working Group 1: University Culture Change

Chair: Ian Munton

This working group will look to

  • review our university culture by conducting a survey and running focus groups/workshops to gather information of the experiences of staff and students at the University regarding race equality.
  • create an early output of an agreed ‘Aberystwyth University Race Language and Terminology Guidance for students and staff’.
  • advise the SAT and wider University on the issues identified and suggest further areas for development and training
  • Explore racial tensions at the University and within local community
  • Engage with minority ethnic staff and students

Working Group 2: Staff Profile and data, Recruitment, Progression and Development

Chair: Ankita Trivedi

This working group will collect and analyse data and report on

  • Staff profile and recruitment (academic and Professional and support staff)
  • Grievances and disciplinary processes
  • Staff progression and promotion
  • Staff training and development
  • Staff Appraisal/development review
  • Research Excellence Framework (REF)

Working Group 3 Student Pipeline, admissions, attainment and Teaching and Learning

Co-Chairs: Bayanda Vundamina, Lucy Taylor and Alan Macmillan

This working group will look collect and analyse and report on

  • Student profile, recruitment and admissions
  • Postgraduate Pipeline and Employment
  • Course progression and attainment
  • Course content/ syllabus including the University’s approach to Diversifying the Curriculum to new and existing courses
  • Teaching and assessment methods, learning environment and student participation
  • Academic confidence, including training and support for race equality development 

Each Working Group will decide upon their frequency and method of meeting (at least monthly) and will report their progress (via the Chair) to the monthly RAG meetings.
