IBERS PhD student Kezia Whatley was presented to the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh this week as one of the young scientists who attended the Commonwealth Science Conference in Bangalore in India at the end of last year.

Kezia participated in a focus group along with 4 other young scientists, to follow up on their experience of attending the Conference.

Kezia said “This has been a fantastic opportunity for me to meet other Commonwealth scientists and to tell the Queen about my project focusing on identifying new drugs for combating schistosomiasis (Bilharzia).

We were all invited to attend the Commonwealth Day Reception at Marlborough House, which was attended by the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, and other dignitaries. “

This was the first Commonwealth Science Conference (CSC) for nearly 50 years and was organised by the Royal Society and supported by the Government of India.

The goals of the conference are to celebrate excellence in Commonwealth science; to provide opportunities for cooperation between researchers in different Commonwealth countries; to inspire young scientists; and to build scientific capacity in the developing nations within the Commonwealth. The scope of the meeting was broad and included physical sciences, life sciences, mathematics and engineering, as well as science policy.

The Conference was attended by 300 specially invited scientists and 70 PhD students from across the Commonwealth, together with local delegates from Bangalore.
