Approaches to Landscape Painting

This module will develop skills in picture-making using landscape as a focus. The course equips students with the necessary skills and techniques to make images and paintings on their travels and to record the essence of the scene without necessarily making a resolved painting. All classes will be taught on location.
Syllabus:
Introduction and pre-class preparation and discussion
• Using photography as a source and aid: the pitfalls of working from photographs
• The Grand Tour: Using travel for Inspiration
Workshops will Include
• Compositional techniques: re-composing into different formats
• Essential construction lines on location
• Discussion on traditional landscape format: Repoussoir
• The Imagined Landscape and sketches from memory
• Spirit of place
We would expect that you will dedicate 100 hours of learning to gain the most from this module. This course will give demonstrations and contextual awareness before students attend sessions on location.
