The British landscape results from its underlying physical geology being moulded by subsequent geomorphological and biological activities. Superimposed upon this are the changes brought about by human activities. Britain’s landscapes will continue to change, so this important resource needs managing. To do this effectively requires a large number of skills and an understanding of the wide range of issues affecting the countryside. This course will examine the role and effectiveness of the present legislation including National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Heritage Coasts, World Heritage Sites and Landscapes of Outstanding Historic Interest, as well as the usefulness of projects such as Landmap (Landscape Assessment and Decision Making Process). Study visits will be made to the Ceredigion uplands, Borth and Tregaron.
