The Kingdom of Fungi is a fascinating, ancient and diverse one. In this introductory course, we delve into this world, looking at the vital ecological role fungi play in our forests and showing how species vary according to habitat - be this woodland or pasture. Although we will touch on many aspects of mycology the focus will be on how to identify the larger fungi with a look at some of the key edible and poisonous species in the UK. It includes an overview of the historical relationship in Britain and Europe, with a look at the use of fungi for food, medicine and craft.

This distance learning course enables you to study from home through a variety of presentations, worksheets and videos and participate in an online community of other students.

The module is delivered through Blackboard, our online learning environment, there will be an online webinar both at the beginning and end of the course, and a chance to ask questions and share your discoveries through discussion forums and journals.

Assessment of this module includes a profile of a fungi of your choice (600 words), a fungi identification quiz and submission of a short journal which shares your reflections and observations of fungi throughout the course.
