This course promotes the study of art history as a fundamental tool in the education of the artists. From the point of view of the needs of artists seeking to understand how art objects were made in the Western tradition of representation, the course explores the fundamental language of visual art; its syntax, grammar and vocabulary. Under such topics as the importance of drawing, the use of colour, chiaroscuro, perspective and two dimensional space, it introduces the history of representation up to the 20th century. Distance learning requires you to manage your time and motivate yourself. You will receive feedback on your work during the course and there will be specific dates set for you to hand in work to the tutor. Students will need access to a computer, printer, the internet and be able to download MP3 files to take this course. All work will be accessed through our on-line learning environment with regular feedback from your tutor. There will be a traditional start and end date for this course and work will be submitted in paper format.
