The first part of this module considers different aspects of portraiture in a range of different media, with a particular emphasis on the historical context for developments of portraiture in Wales. It considers the wider context of art practice throughout Britain from early Christian times to 21st century, and specific approaches taken by Welsh artists. The second part of the module looks more closely at how artists since 1900 have used portraiture to express personal and emotional responses to contemporary life, such as national identity, the working man, and images of the great and the good. This includes links with different genre and styles across Europe, the significance of self-portraiture, and choices made by Welsh artists such as idealized or politically motivated representations in portraiture. Notable Welsh artists are considered throughout the module, drawing on significant collections housed at NLW and other sources. Activities are designed to help students develop research skills and gain confidence in describing/discussing artists and their work. The module complements the Study of Art & Art History, building on analytic and research skills, helping students to focus more closely on specific elements of the history of Welsh art. It provides the opportunity for practicing artists to describe their own work in the wider context, and complements practical portraiture painting class run by Lifelong Learning.

Chapter one: Course Introduction: The historical context for developments in Welsh art
Outline of historical developments in Welsh art?
Examples of early images of the Welsh People through the ages; in manuscripts (St Chads Gospels, Giraldus Cambriensis, Hywel Dda, Llanbelig book of hours) in sculpture (early Christian stones, medieval fonts and corbels, church effigies and memorials) wood carvings and misericords, stained glass windows and mural paintings.
Activity: Choose 2 images from different periods and media, critically analyse each image and consider how the way they were depicted changed over time and why this might be.
Activity: start a visual 'time Line (ongoing activity through the module), adding details of significant dates/ artists/ changes in depiction.
Chapter two: Defining the Welsh identity
Discussion of Gender, Portraiture and Identity in art. National icons depicted in art: for example, The Bard and The Welsh Lady.
Comparative studies/discussion - The Last Bard, Thomas Grey. Work of artists - Thomas Jones, William Gascombe, John, William Parry, Christopher Williams (Hwfa Mon) Evann Williams, Bedwyr Williams.
Welsh Costumes, Augusta Hall / Lady Llanover, Maria Jane Williams (portrait of) Jemima Nichols, (Rebecca), Dame Wales,(Welsh Not) Evan Walters, Iwan Bala
Activity: consider caricature in literature, film: How green is my valley, Gavin and Stacy. What elements represent the strongest examples of caricature? Other examples?
Chapter Three: Welsh artists and portraiture
Discussion of work of several Welsh artists and the context for their approach to portraiture.
Chapter Four: Portraits of the great and good
How the artist chose to represent Family portraits. The relevance of patronage ? The role of portraits of preachers; miniatures; use of photography
Activity: Discussion notes on a series of known portraits. Visit to an exhibition (* at NLW where possible or their on-line gallery)
Chapter Five: The Working Man
Rural and Industrial settings for portraits of the working man. Realis, idealized or politically motivated representations. Discussion of the function of such portraits.
Examples of work by: Kyffin Williams, Evan Walters, John Elwyn, Archie Rhys Griffiths, Josef Herman, Will Roberts. Comparisons made with painting the working man in European tradition.
Activity: research into the role and function of portraits that depict 'ran at work? in the Welsh context
Chapter Six: The Artist Depicted
Self -portraiture, approaches chosen by artists. What is the artist trying to say to the viewer about themselves or their work?
Chapter Seven: The role of photographers, Artisan painters and image makers
Work of travelling painters / silhouette artists.
