Applique Basics will guide the student in some basic applique techniques, giving them a small repertoire of techniques to help them achieve a final piece. We will look at basic applique tools, techniques and stitches and how to put together an appliqued composition.

The course will run over 4 sessions, each of 2.5 hours.
Session One
Turn or not to turn. Looking at basic applique equipment and supplies. Mini Lecture: different types of applique, including raw edge and turned.
Demonstration: Getting started – templates, stabilizers and preparing pieces.
Student practical : raw edge applique
Home study: to purchase basic materials and experiment and practice raw edge applique in a small composition.
Session Two:
Turned edge applique:
Demonstration: Turned edge techniques - various basic methods using different stabilizers and stitches and how students can achieve each technique.
Student practical : turned edge applique
Home study: Practice techniques/experiment and practice turned edge applique in a small composition.
Session Three
Demonstration: Reverse applique and using more than two layers - basic methods.
Mini Lecture: Building up interesting compositions.
Home study: Practice techniques/experiment and practice reverse applique in a small composition. Students also put together a final piece for assessment, this can use any of the methods learnt so far (This will be assessed during the final session).
Session Four:
Assessment of final appliqued piece.
Embellishing applique: Using embellishments such as hand or machine stitches, sequins and beads as part of an applique design.
