Towards Abstraction

This practical module deals with the debate to define the boundaries between figurative and abstraction. It enables the student to understand and identify some of the rudimentary qualities of abstraction whilst encouraging discussion, reflection and evaluation. Students will gain experience of approaching different ways of abstracting an image from personal observational drawings as well as responding to expression and mood.

Syllabus:
• The module starts with observational drawing projects which are then developed as a result of discussion and individual discussion and tutorial guidance.

• Colour theory
• Responsive drawings
• Mark-making in drawing media and paint
