A beginners course for those who wish to get to grips with drawing skills. Aimed at complete beginners and using a simple medium to create coloured drawings. You will be guided through drawing techniques, shading and tone using small but interesting still life’s. Learn techniques that will form a solid ground for further art modules within the Certificate programme. All materials are supplied for class sessions. You will need to purchase your own materials for further classes.

Session One: Meet your materials
Home study: Make small studies using cross hatch techniques
20 min discussion: qualities of pencil crayons and pencils
Demonstration: cross hatching leading to exercise using a still life.
Home study: cross hatching experimentations showing limitations of material.
Session Two: Light sources: Grisaille
Chiaroscuro and creating depth of tone
Short demonstration and compositional skills on tone (Grisaille)
Home study: Prepare for next week. Search artists who use pencil crayon and make notes in your log / diary. Can you spot the techniques or makers qualities?
Session Three: A little still life in a jar: transportable still life
Home study: Work on Still life
Session Four: A touch of Hockney
Studying the techniques of David Hockney
20 Minute discussion: Looking at Landscapes: sketching in the field
Home study: Preparation of imagery for next session. Start self- directed theme.
Session Five: The Urban Landscape
Workshop: Looking at the work of Ernest Zobole / David Gentleman
Hidden Curriculum: Perspective!
Tutorials: setting theme for self-directed study
